Lithium-Ion batteries can charge and discharge partially to smooth the difference in demand and generation. This allows excess energy during sunny or windy times of day to be stored for use later. Also, partial cycles don’t have any negative effect on the life of a lithium battery, as there is no memory effect. Lithium-Ion batteries can be charged and discharged thousands of times, which is perfect for wind and solar generation!
Lithium-Ion batteries are 98% efficient storing energy. This high efficiency reduces the total power generation demand on a hybrid or microgrid application. If you must run a diesel generator to provide power, you can capture more energy from that diesel and turn off the generator sooner. Diesel generators run most efficiently when loaded to near 100% rated capacity. Once the batteries are charged the generator can be turned off allowing the load to run on silent, efficient Lithium-Ion stored energy. This reduces the refueling requirements and lowers the cost of fuel substantially.
