Lithium Battery Generator Replacement for Your Facility

Emergency and backup power are integral to the reliable operation of mission-critical systems and facilities, including telecom switching centers, mobile switching centers, and data centers. Diesel Generators have traditionally been used to provide emergency backup power in conjunction with uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). Clean decarbonization and electrification efforts are leading to lithium batteries becoming a viable alternative to diesel generators.

Lithium batteries are the critical pillar in a fossil fuel-free economy and their uses in electric vehicles and stationary energy storage have grown exponentially in recent years, due to technological advances and significant price declines. This is making Lithium backup batteries a potential replacement for Diesel Generators too.

Together with solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind, modular energy solutions are reducing the cost of renewables and making decentralized solutions economically viable, complementing other renewable grid connections. Lithium batteries have become an integrated part of decentralized, often mini or micro, off-grid renewable energy systems, replacing diesel power generators in many remote areas.

Unlike Diesel Generators, when batteries are not used for backup, they can double up as battery energy storage systems (BESS) that help address the imbalances of the grid, generally coming from excess or deficits between the production of electricity and consumption in real time. BESS are typically comprised of an energy storage rack, power conversion and power generation such as diesel or gas generators.

Alternatively, Lithium Ion batteries can be paired with Diesel Generators and allow the generators to run only for short periods each day, charging the batteries up. Then the generators are turned off, and the lithium batteries power the load for 8 or more hours. This ensure the generator is running at peak efficiency and reduces the fuel cost by 50% or more simply using an li ion UPS.
