Often grid power might not be reliable in your location, or the connection to the grid isn’t large enough for your equipment. As the world moves toward the electrification of cars, trucks, and automated guided vehicles the demand for high power local charging is increasing. Many locations such as airports, factories, and apartment complexes were not built anticipating the substantial number of electric vehicles that will be on premises in the future. All these vehicles need to charge when not in use and can significantly increase the electrical demand on the existing infrastructure. It can be very costly to increase the electrical service to the building, and it will cost more to have more electricity available at any moment (demand charge).
Using lithium-ion batteries and a grid tied inverter can provide peak shaving capabilities. When an electric vehicle connects to their charger and demands electricity, the battery and inverter can turn on to provide the peak power to the vehicle and reduce the strain on the grid connection. This peak shaving capability allows multiple large loads to be installed in a location that may not be able to power all of them at the same time.
In places where the grid connection may be weak or not reliable using a lithium-ion battery backup system paired with an inverter can provide power when the grid fails and charge up the battery when the grid connection is stable. Applications that typically benefit from this type of system include remote or rural locations outside of minor cities, users located on poorly constructed or overwhelmed electrical grids, and places with lots of outages caused by weather or construction.
